Water Spinach

Ipomoea reptans/ aquatica

Also known as water morning glory, it is an excellent source of essential nutrients, including vitamins A, C, and several B vitamins, along with minerals such as iron, calcium, and magnesium. These nutrients are crucial for maintaining overall health and supporting bodily functions.  There are two types; the uplant type (narrow shaped) that is adapted to moist soils and the lowland type (broad arrow-head shaped) that is adapted to flooded environments.

Nature of The Plant

Widely cultivated in Southeast Asia, East Asia, and South Asia. It grows in wet enviornments and is as semi-aquatic perennial herb. In some countries, the lowland type of is considered invasive or a noxious weed as the Water spinach can takeover wetland areas very quickly. A permit is required in Florida to grow water spinach, even in the home garden.

 

The health protecting properties of L. aquatica are attributed to the rich presence of phytochecmicals, micronutrients and antioxidants. It is also nutritionally rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber and essential amino acids. The plant contains various antioxidants that help protect cells from oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease.
