The white mulberry is a fast-growing shrub native to China. Morus alba, as other Morus species, has been utilized in Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Korean traditional medicine. It typically reaches heights of 10 to 20 meters. The tree can produce sweet, edible fruits that vary in color from white to pink and deep purple, which are enjoyed by various wildlife, including birds and mammals. Compared with other morphological parts, fruits are the most popular [3] and white mulberry leaves (WML) show the highest antioxidant activity.
M. alba leaves and fruit have a high content of bioactive compounds such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, flavonols, anthocyanins, macronutrients, vitamins, and volatile aromatic compounds. These compounds are what makes M. alba effective in preventing and treating illnesses such as oxidative stress, diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, neurological disorders (like Parkinson’s disease), microbial infections, and cancer.
Compounds protect neurons, potentially lowering the risk of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
Flavonoids and anthocyanins may inhibit cancer cell growth and protect against oxidative stress.
