Murbei Jumbo Merah

Morus rubra

Morus rubra (Red Mulberry), belonging to the mulberry family, originates from the eastern USA and is now also found in certain areas of China, Korea, and Japan. In contrast, the white mulberry (Morus alba), native to China, has been widely cultivated worldwide due to its adaptability to different climates and conditions. Red mulberry is known for its various health benefits, including antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic properties. It has higher antioxidant properties than the white mulberry, primarily due to its high anthocyanin content, which also contributes to its strong anti-inflammatory effects.

Nature of The Plant

This tree bears edible fruits called red mulberries, which have been used in various medicinal applications. In traditional medicine, such as Chinese medicine, they are used to treat diabetes, hypertension, anemia, and arthritis. The red mulberry sap was used to treat ringworm, while the stem bark was used as a purgative (laxative) and vermifuge (to kill parasitic worms that live in the bodies of other living organisms).

In a culinary context, red mulberries are commonly eaten fresh, in jams, baked goods, sauces, preserves, etc.

The mulberry bark has also been used in simple herbal remedies to treat colds, coughs, and digestive issues. Additionally, it is used to make traditional crafts. For example, in Japan, the bark plays a role in the production of washi paper (a traditional paper known for its texture and strength). It can also be used as a natural dye (for fabrics and other materials) and for crafting purposes (making baskets, mats, etc.), benefiting from its fibrous and flexible characteristics.

Our Benefit

Antioxidant Properties

Morus rubra is a significant source of antioxidants, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, and anthocyanins. These compounds help combat oxidative stress by neutralizing free radicals, which can contribute to chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. The antioxidant activity also supports overall cellular health and may aid in anti-aging processes.

Blood Sugar Regulation

Research indicates that Morus rubra possesses hypoglycemic effects, making it beneficial for individuals with diabetes. It has been shown to lower blood glucose levels effectively, similar to the action of glibenclamide, a common anti-diabetic medication.

Cardiovascular Health

The consumption of Morus rubra may help reduce levels of both total and LDL cholesterol, thereby lowering the risk of atherosclerosis. Its high content of flavonoids contributes to improved blood circulation and vascular health by promoting the dilation of blood vessels.

Kidney Health

Morus rubra extracts have shown protective effects against kidney damage, particularly in cases related to diabetes (diabetic nephropathy). These extracts help improve insulin resistance and reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in kidney tissues.

Immune System Support

The phytochemicals found in Morus rubra enhance immune function. They activate macrophages, which are crucial for the body’s defense against pathogens. Additionally, the high vitamin C content further boosts immunity.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Morus rubra exhibits anti-inflammatory properties that can help manage conditions related to chronic inflammation. This can be particularly beneficial for joint health and in reducing symptoms associated with arthritis.
