Petai

Parkia speciosa

Bitter bean, stink bean, or petai, is a tropical tree belonging to the Fabaceae family. It can grow up to 30 meters tall, with flowers that attract bats and other pollinators. This plant is notable for its long, flat edible pods that contain bright green seeds, which are similar in size and shape to almonds. They are a unique culinary ingredient in Southeast Asian cuisine. Out of the genus Parkia, P. speciosa is one of the most studied species, along with P. biglobosa.
 

Nature of The Plant

The genus Parkia (Fabaceae, Subfamily Mimosoideae) comprises about 34 species of mostly evergreen trees widely distributed across the neotropics, Asia, and Africa. Parkia speciosa is considered one of the most underutilized plants with multidimensional utility and benefits. Its potential health benefits are due to its vast pharmacological properties, attributed to the abundance of various bioactive constituents such as flavonoids, alkaloids, phenols, terpenoids, and other phytochemicals.
